Our History

Janney has more than 185 years of experience providing comprehensive financial advice and high quality service to individuals, families, corporations, and institutions.

Since 1982, Janney has enjoyed a strong and stable position as an independently operated subsidiary of The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Both Janney and Penn Mutual have conservative operating models which, combined with an unbroken string of profitable years, empowers us to uphold our commitment to financial advisors and their clients. We operate our business privately, securely and successfully, and continue to invest in our robust platform.

Our Secret to Success

For over 180 years, our long-term perspective is based on first-hand knowledge that turbulent market cycles can and will be weathered. We understand that the success of our business depends largely on the quality of our people, from the accessibility and support of our management team and home office associates, to the expertise our Financial Advisors provide their clients.

Our Values

At Janney, we live our values every day. This is who we are and what we do to meet our goal of providing the highest standard of success in financial relationships.

  • Deliver with integrity
  • Drive for results
  • Keep people at the center
  • Exceed expectations

Our clearly defined values have created an environment of trust and accountability. These values, and the behaviors associated with them, enable us to deliver the highest level of financial advice, ideas, and service to clients. Based on our rich 180-year past, we expect to continue this mission for a long time to come.

Our Parent Company

Janney and our parent company, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, share a partnership more than 38 years strong. This partnership is anchored in the belief that client needs are first and foremost.

Penn Mutual believes strongly that its success depends on its ability to forge and maintain strong, lasting relationships through financial professionals that deliver personal care and attention, trusted insight, and relevant solutions for their clients. The firm’s mutual structure allows Penn Mutual to make long-term decisions in the best interest of its policyholders, without the pressure to maximize quarterly profits or meet shareholder demands.

Both Janney and Penn Mutual remain focused on building our strong capital base and balance sheet through a low-risk management style and conservative business model.

Penn Mutual’s ongoing financial strength and support are important contributors to Janney’s solid foundation and financial stability.

“Janney is the best-performing long-term asset in Penn Mutual’s portfolio. Our affiliation with Janney continues to be a credit positive for Penn Mutual, and one of which we are very proud.” - Eileen C. McDonnell, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company
