A lot was happening around the world in 1973. The Paris Peace Accords are signed. OPEC would increase oil prices by 200%. U.S. inflation was at 6.2%. The Sears Tower was opened in Chicago. “Battle of the Sexes” between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Secretariat wins the Triple Crown. The movies “American Graffiti”, “The Sting”, “Paper Moon” and “Live and Let Die” debut. Albums released include, “Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ” by Bruce Springsteen, “The Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd, and “Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player” by Elton John. “The Princess Bride” by William Goldman and “Breakfast of Champions” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. were published. Steve Jobs would turn 18 years old, three years before launching Apple. The Dow Jones Industrial Average would start 1973 at 1,032.

This same year, a young entrepreneur, Bill McCollum, started a business in Charlotte, NC known today as The McCollum Group. Bill’s vision for The McCollum Group started with a simple mindset, caring about people, their families and their futures. The business has been operating through events like Watergate, Three Mile Island nuclear disaster, hostage crisis in Iran, Falkland Islands War, Chernobyl disaster, the end of The Cold War, taking down “The Wall” in Germany, War in Iraq, War in Afghanistan, Mad Cow disease, Y2K, 9/11, Enron, WorldCom, the “dot-com” bubble, “The Great Recession,” the world’s population grew from 3.9 billion to over 8 billion, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average went from 1,032 to 33,147 to begin The McCollum Group’s 50th year. For 50 years, we have served 100’s of households with that same mindset, caring about people, their families and their futures.
